Welcome to Highlands!
My name is Eli Butcher and I am a very proud ELD Teacher and member of the Highlands Team. I received my Bachelors degree with hopes of working in the field of International Development. Many of my mentors and heroes growing up (including my mother) were teachers so I’ve always had a great amount of respect for educators and a strong desire to teach myself. I’ve had multiple coaching, leading, and mentoring roles in my life, but my first time officially working as a teacher was in South Korea in 2018. In addition to my 9-5 job, I also spent time working with TNKR, an incredible organization that provides free English classes to North Korean refugees. To put it simply, I fell in love with teaching and I know now this is what I am supposed to do with my life.
I joined Highlands in November of 2020. I count myself incredibly lucky to be a part of the Highlands Team. Everything about the organization is centered around positive transformations, new opportunities, and unlocking potential. If you trust in Highlands, great things will come your way.
In my classroom I have a couple of rules, but one in particular is the most important to me. The rule is “No ‘Sorry’s”. People make mistakes and that is very much an integral part of learning and of life. I believe it is important for people to re-brand mistakes as ‘developmental errors’.
In conclusion, I believe in the transformative power of education. I know that if you show up to class ready to work and risk making mistakes you are guaranteed to improve. So please show up class and let’s get this beautiful process started! I can’t wait to meet you!
